Practice Spelling With Your Children
Practice spelling with your children is not only ideal for your kids but maybe it can also benefit you. Lots of adults have trouble actually spelling right. Exercises with your children can also be a good exercise for you! Though I am over thirty years old, I have to make some time to practice spelling. Being a writer, you would think that I am pretty good at it, but the truth is that I am far from a decent speller. I do pretty well, but there are words that seem to trip me up no matter how many times I try to spell them. Most of them are hard words, but there are a few simple ones that get me every single time. It’s like I have a mental block when it comes to those words, and no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to get them right.
Having a great word processor like Word does not help me practice spelling. I see the same red squiggles under the same misspelled words each time I work on something. If it were not for Word, I might well be out of a job. I guess everyone uses spell check today when they are typing, but there is something to be said for knowing how to spell the words you use the most. Perhaps if I had some time to practice spelling this wouldn’t be so bad for me.
I guess my chance will come as my daughter gets older. She will have to practice spelling, and I will have to help her. I know my husband is very smart, and he might better be the one she turns to for help in school, but I don’t think there is any harm in me taking the time to practice spelling with my little girl. It will do us both a lot of good. I will make sure I have a dictionary handy, however, as I can’t trust myself to be totally accurate when I am helping.
You can find a lot of ways to practice spelling, though I think we will just do it the old fashioned way. She will most likely come home with a spelling list, and we will quiz each other. Though many children do fine with just being quizzed by their mom or dad, I think that if she quizzes me as well that she will learn more, and lets face it, so will I. There may be some ways to practice spelling online, and we may try some of them as well. She has a spelling game for her Vsmile, though she is too young to use it just yet. That will also come in very handy as she learns.
