2nd Grade Spelling Words

Parents are always interested in their children’s education and school results. What exactly is the level of spelling words and teaching grammar in the 2nd grade of elementary school? Lots of research went into this pedagogical project… By the time your child reaches second grade in elementary school he will have learned so many things about language. One of the most important aspects of learning to read and write is learning how to spell correctly. Teachers and educational professionals have worked diligently over the years to develop teaching strategies to introduce and reinforce 2nd grade spelling words.

Education professionals created a methodical approach to teaching 2nd grade spelling words that make the process predictable and comfortable for the children in the classroom. Using a systematic approach is a great way to help children learn in an environment that feels safe. Structure is crucial to a child’s sense of security even when dealing with 2nd grade spelling words.

The list that is included in the school district’s curriculum is organized by vowel sounds. This not only helps the child learn his 2nd grade spelling words but it also helps him gain an understanding of phonics as well as learning his vowels. Instead of creating a haphazard list of 2nd grade spelling words educators choose to introduce them by sound and by common elements, namely vowels.

The very first group that is commonly introduced contains the short “a” vowel sounds. Of course this is deliberate. Since “a” is the first vowel in the alphabet, it is the wise letter of choice in this first list of 2nd grade spelling words. You will usually see the terms, “cat, hat”, and “bat” on this list.

The next list contains 2nd grade spelling words that have the short “e” vowel sound and the lists progress to the next vowel in order of the alphabet and so on. Notice that each word has only one syllable and that they always have short vowel sounds on these lists.

After the class has demonstrated a mastery of these short vowel lists of 2nd grade spelling words they are ready to move on to more complex and more challenging words. These lists usually begin with a combination of vowels, specifically words that end in “e”. Of course, the vowel accompanying the “e” on this list is “a”. The system progresses just as it did in the short vowel sound collection of 2nd grade spelling words.

Following words that end in the letter “e” are paired vowels found in terms like “sail”. As you can see the methodical approach is very carefully planned and extremely well organized. The very structured teaching strategy helps maximize the students’ learning potential.
